What’s a webring?

At a base level, a webring is a community of personal website owners who link to each other’s websites, commonly via a central site.

Cool, can I join?

Yes, with three caveats.

  1. You make games. This includes but is not limited to: Video games, Board games, Tabletop RPGs, Branching narratives, or any other subdivision therein. If you’ve tried a game jam, poked around in godot, or even just make art/ music for games you’re welcome to join.
  2. You own and operate a personal website. Custom domains are not required; Neocities, Nekoweb, and github pages-hosted sites are more than welcome. Just make sure you’ve added the GDT widget (below) somewhere on your site!
  3. You are a respectful individual. GDT is a place for those of all identies and backgrounds to share their love of game design; If you or your website feature hateful speech, racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or any other assorted nasties, you are not welcome here.

If you fit the criteria, you can join by opening up a PR adding your site to the members.json file on the GDT GitHub. Again, remember to add the widget somewhere on your site.

If you’re not familiar with the process of opening a Pull request, check out CONTRIBUTING.md! And if you have any questions from there, open a thread on the GDT github discussions page, so someone can help you out!

If you wish to just participate in the community without joining the webring instead, you are also more than welcome to do so.

Why?

Barring actual development communities that work on the FOSS itself, I don’t see enough communities built around open source resources these days, especially in the realm of the indie web. Forums go up and promptly die the moment their curator loses interest, and individual community members can’t do a whole lot to help things out. I want to remedy that in what little ways I can. In this case, I’m making a little webring dedicated to a particular niche that I care about. If you want to help out or do the same elsewhere, I encourage you to steal the contents of this site and do so!
